Water temperature and your hair cuticles!

13Sep10

I am a huge fan of contrast showering. Basically contrast showering is giving your entire body a blast of cool water before stepping out of the shower. This opens pores, aids in detoxification, and helps the blood circulate. I am an even bigger fan of it for my hair. The temperature of the water you use will make a difference in the health of your hair. When you wash your hair you should use lukewarm water, this will loosen dirt and open the hair cuticles. I wants to make sure the shampoo is penetrating the hair and cleansing it from the inside out. Next apply your conditioner, the pores will still be open so the conditioner will have a chance to penetrate the hair shaft. The contrast comes into play when you are rinsing your conditioner out. During the conditioner rinse out stage you want to use cool water. The cool water will help close the hair cuticle locking in the moisture given to your hair. When rinsing with cool water your will notice your hair is shinier and has a healthier appearance, this is because the cuticle is closed and light is bouncing off the smooth surface. Contrast showering does take some getting used too, but I promise the results you receive will be amazing!

Kinky-Curly "Wash-n-Go"

01Sep10

I don't wash-n-go everyday because too much water can be damaging to your hair.  However, it's one of the easiest routines to adapt.  My wash-n-go routine is very simple.  I shampoo once with Kinky-Curly Come Clean.  I condition my hair with Kinky-Curly Knot Today, detangle, toss my back in the water, then add more Knot Today.  While my hair is soaking wet and in four sections, I apply a small amount of Kinky-Curly Curling Custard to each section.  I'm looking to adapt a similar process using different products just to see how it works and keep you updated.

Review: L'Oreal Studio Line Unkempt Out of Bed Weightless Texturizer

22Aug10

A few weeks ago I ran out of Bee Mine Balanced Moisturizer aka Hair Crack. Since I was waiting on an order from Afroveda, I didn't want to place an additional order to Bee Mine just yet.  So I decided to take a visit to Rite Aid to see if I could find something to hold me over.

Normally, I would use hair gel but I've found from the last time I big chopped (2008) that daily use of gel can dry my hair out quickly.  I knew I needed something with the hold of gel but with better feel.  I picked up L'Oreal Studio Line Unkempt, Out of Bed Weightless Texturizer.

I figured since it was a gel/cream combo it wouldn't be as drying.  Well.............

It's drying in a different way from gel. Let's give it an overall review.

First things first, the price is nice. (under $5.)  I noticed when I opened the jar, its thicker than I expected.  I decided not to be as heavy handed as I normally would be.  When I first applied it, I noticed it had nice hold.  Gel allows me to shape my hair.  One day last month, I caught my reflection around 6 pm and my hair was sprouting out at the sides.  I looked like I had little wings.  I was hoping the Out of Bed would prevent that.  It did.

I normally style my hair wet and air dry.  The problem with the Out of Bed is that it dries slow.  So by 9 am, my neck and forehead felt sticky.  And when its hot and humid, the last thing you want to add to that is sticky.  I was hoping it would give me a little shine.  It doesn't.  The shine you see in the picture is what my hair normally looks like without product.  It didn't tame the frizz either.  My real issue with the product is that I couldn't rinse it out in the morning.  So everyday I used it, I had to wash it out instead of doing my normal rinse and go.  It holds a little too well.  So my hair is gummy when I wake up.  When I say its drying in a different way, its because of the fact I had to wash my hair so much to get rid of product buildup.

All that being said, would I purchase again. Hmm....I think the main issue here is HOW I used it.  This is not a good product for wash and gos but it could be a good product for braid outs and twist outs because of its holding factor and the fact it doesn't dry heavy.  It could be a good gel for your edges.  If you are looking for a good gel to mold your hair without a lot of weight, this could be a winner.  I will hold on to it and use for a two strand twist out when my hair is a bit longer.  Then I'll revisit this review.
